The What would you do if? Game

The What would you do if? Game was originally designed to engage children and adolescents in therapy. The game has been proven particularly effective in initiating discussions with clients who have difficulties communicating thoughts and feelings. The game was developed to facilitate engagement of reluctant clients using a non-threatening game format. It is also useful in Family Play Therapy sessions to initiate communication among family members, group therapy, or for use in individual counseling as an ice breaker.

Description of Card Categories

The What would you do if? Game can be played in a variety of ways with individuals aged 6 to 17 or among family members. Game cards are color coded to represent four different categories of questions.

	Cards with a red question mark are assessment questions that will assist adults in understanding a child’s world view, interests, wishes, dislikes, strengths, and needs.
	Cards with a blue question mark include questions about interpersonal situations at school, home, and in the community.
	Cards with a green question mark involve situations that require problem-solving abilities.
	Cards with a yellow question mark help adults to determine a child’s coping capacity in a variety of situations.

WHO IS THIS GAME INTENDED FOR?

This game is intended for mental health professionals and counselors working with children and adolescents in a variety of contexts. The adult should always play with the child or adolescent to initiate discussion and model appropriate responses.
